Quiet streets
A shopping street in Kobe before it wakes, a monk crossing a snowy temple yard, stone lanterns along a misty path.
Busy places have a quiet hour, and it is often the most revealing one.
A shopping street in Kobe in the morning, shutters and signs waiting for the day to begin. A monk with an umbrella crossing a snowy temple yard, a single dark figure on white ground. Stone lanterns along a misty forest path at Kōyasan, the mountain monastery area in Japan, fading into fog. And an alley in Taiwan where old buildings share space with greenery.
In quiet scenes, small things carry the picture: one person, the texture of a wall, the way light falls on an empty street. There is nothing to hide behind, so composition and timing matter more.
These photographs are a reminder that emptiness is not the absence of a subject. Sometimes it is the subject.
