White áo dài, lace hats and flowing silk
A second set of áo dài portraits: white silk under a lace hat, green fabric in motion, a stone colonnade and spring flowers.
The áo dài is shaped to move. Its two long panels, front and back, are split from the waist down, so the fabric swings with every step and lifts in the slightest breeze. Many of the best áo dài photographs are really pictures of that movement.
White is the colour most closely tied to the dress. In many Vietnamese high schools, a white áo dài is the uniform for female students, and for that reason it carries a strong sense of youth and school days. The first portrait pairs white silk with a lace conical hat, a decorative variation on the everyday leaf hat, so that light passes through and patterns the shade.
The second frame is about colour and motion: a woman in a flowing green outfit, the fabric caught mid-swing. The third uses architecture, an áo dài walking along a stone colonnade, the repeated columns giving rhythm to the frame.
The gallery closes outdoors, with a conical hat among peach blossoms, the season when many people put on their best áo dài.
