City lights and light trails
Traffic drawn as lines of light, a tower glowing from above, skylines reflected in a river at dusk.
A city at night is made of moving light and fixed light, and a camera can show both in a way the eye cannot.
The first image is in black and white: traffic on a long avenue reduced to streaks of light, a long exposure turning hundreds of cars into a few smooth lines. Without colour, the picture becomes almost a drawing.
The others hold still. An illuminated tower seen from above, Taipei's skyscrapers lit up against the dark, a skyline reflected in a river at dusk, and city lights under a pink sky over Xizhi, in New Taipei.
Together they show the hour when cities change shift. Offices stay lit, roads fill with headlights, and the sky still keeps a little colour before it goes black. It is a short window, and it rewards anyone willing to wait for it with a tripod and some patience.
