Bắc Sơn: a valley of stilt houses and a sea of clouds
A green valley in the north-east, ringed by limestone hills, where Tày and Nùng villages sit among rice fields and early mornings can fill the basin with clouds.

A basin among limestone hills
Bắc Sơn lies in the mountains of north-eastern Vietnam, a few hours north of Hanoi. It is a long, flat-bottomed valley enclosed by limestone hills, the kind of landscape where karst peaks rise straight out of the rice fields. The valley floor is farmed intensively, and villages sit at its edges, close to the slopes and the water.
Tày and Nùng villages
The valley is home mainly to Tày and Nùng communities, and it is known for its traditional wooden stilt houses. Raised on posts, with living space above and room for storage and animals below, they suit a climate of heavy rain and cool winters. Many villages have kept clusters of these houses, which gives Bắc Sơn a more traditional appearance than many towns of the lowlands.

The sea of clouds
Bắc Sơn's best-known image is the view from the hills above the valley at dawn. When the air is cool and still, mist and low cloud settle into the basin, and the peaks appear like islands above it. A short climb to a viewpoint above the town, often called Nà Lay peak, is the usual place to see it. The clouds depend on weather, not the calendar; clear, cool mornings after a humid night are often the best chance.

History and seasons
The name is also familiar from Vietnamese history books because of the Bắc Sơn uprising of 1940, one of the early armed movements against colonial rule. Today the valley is better known for its landscape and its farming: the fields change from flooded silver to green to gold with each rice crop, and the surrounding hills grow fruit in the colder months.
Why it stays with people
Bắc Sơn is not a dramatic place in the way Hà Giang is. Its appeal is gentler: a closed valley, old houses, fields and a sky that sometimes comes down to meet the ground. For me, it is a good example of how much of northern Vietnam's beauty is quiet rather than grand.
